In partnership with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), Help Channel has established hugely-successful Food-For-Work reforestation programmes in rural Burundi, where many years of civil war and unrestrained over-exploitation have despoiled the country’s forest resources. As a result, those who suffer the most are the subsistence farmers dependant on the environment for their well being, who have no means to respond effectively to deteriorating environmental conditions. The Food-For-Work reforestation programmes do much more than provide food to the hungry; they offer the opportunity for meaningful employment through which workers contribute to the restoration of their local environment. In doing so, Help Channel hopes that the entire country will benefit through increased food security.
